“In Korean sumi e means ink and water.
Ink is a form of writing summoning the whole body into its awareness of being in the world.

The brushes, papers, pigments and stones used for tracing the circles or bamboo that I have been making for several decades are of plant and mineral origin: their texture, their fiber and their odors give off a vibration of the Earth giving his presence at the work which is accomplished in the course of the movement. If the movement does not occur, the ink traces cannot take place.

Sometimes it passes as naturally as time, leaving its mark in the form of a language whose graphic signs are identical to those of digital writing also made of circles and lines.

All the flavor of this ancestral practice lies in the interstice between mastering the technique and letting the movement go. Looking for an earthly writing in communication with any type of understanding on any type of visible or invisible territory? To be continued …"

Inks on hemp paper.

Lydie Toran, Bambous d'automne
Lydie Toran

Lydie Toran

France  • 1965

Artist, author, academic from Avignon, Lydie Toran holds a double doctorate in literature and performing arts. Trained in dance and performance with established artists such as Cindy Van Acker, Nach, Jan Fabre, Maguy Marin and Jan Martens, among others, her practices invest performance art in France in renowned places such as Beaubourg Paris and the Lambert Collection, or ordinary places dedicated to everyday life.

In New Mexico, United States, his creations in ink on vegetable paper are carried by a plasticity of movement. They aspire to an ideology of peace in a performative approach consisting of preparation of the body on the ground.

With years of practice and teaching in his place of residence, the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque for Sumi e, the Alliance Française in the same city and the University of Avignon for literature, the Pavillon Bosio in Monaco for scenography and ESA Avignon for performance, Lydie Toran specializes in project teaching. Linked to her experiences as a researcher or speaker and to her artistic practices, her critical publications focus on the relationships between living art and visual art, notably with Ghelderode and Jan Fabre; his poetic publications observe the sensitivity of a state of being in the world and the environment offered by the planet.

In 2019, with the composer Rodriguez Vangama she founded the Compagnie Artères, producing shows and exhibitions. One of its principles - friendship and rapprochement between humans - despite the ideological clashes massively relayed by the media, seeks to rediscover the essential link between humans and the Earth.
