Artwork location: Germany

Slinkachu started his “Little People Project” in 2006, and the concept is as simple as it is ingenious: the artist uses small figures and miniatures to create scenes in urban space, giving the location a whole new meaning, which he then photographs. Slinkachu then leaves the scene in place so that it can be found by someone else.

In his work, the artist combines humor and spontaneity with the loneliness of city life.

Slinkachu started working with miniatures in 2006. In his work, he rebuilds miniature figures from model trains and then places them on the street. These are sculptures as well as street art installations and photographs. The street-related side of his work plays with the concept of surprise, and he wants to encourage city dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes he stages, made more explicit through photography and the titles Slinkachu gives them, are meant to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city; the universal feeling of being overlooked, lost and overwhelmed. But alongside this, there is always a certain humor in his work. The modern world can be an absurd place to live, and he encourages compassion for the tiny people struggling to survive.

Emerging artists

Slinkachu is an English artist, photographer, visual artist and blogger born in 1979 in Great Britain. A photographer from the street, he first worked in several advertising agencies, as artistic director. Passionate about his art, he decides to leave everything to devote himself fully to it. Slinkachu became known to London city dwellers through the “Little People" project. The artist launched this initiative in 2006, and took over the streets of the capital. Using small figurines, he creates micro-scenes of everyday life using waste he finds on the paving stones. Once his installation suits him, he photographs it and then leaves it as it is, in plain view of passers-by. The latter are challenged by this sudden appearance, by the introduction of this artistic microcosm in the public space. Thus, a figurine skate on orange skins, others splash around in an improvised swimming pool in a coke cap whose empty bottle serves as a fountain ... Full of imagination, of finesse and precision, these miniature installations delight city dwellers, who have to look carefully at the trivial details of their daily lives. The “Little People" project is both a street-art project, but also a photographic project. After the installation, place for macro photography which preserves the illusion of reality and life-size staging, then comes wide-angle photography, which reintroduces the work into its urban environment, readjusting the sizes to bear witness to the miniature character of the achievement. Slinkachu also exhibits in museums and galleries, even if his primary passion remains street work. He has notably presented his work in Paris, Berlin, New York, London, Moscow, Beijing and Shanghai.
