Moshe Leider
Tel Aviv From July 14, 2023 to September 10, 2023
As a young artist he was accepted to the academy of arts in Moscow.
In Israel he studied painting with Raffi Lavie.
When Vasily Kandinsky, the founding father of the abstract art, was asked about the source of his inspiration for his abstract compositions, he explained that while listening to classical music he experiences flashes and spots of colors before his eyes.
The sounds were not transparent entities that exist only on the plane of hearing, but also had body, color and presence, and the next step would be to paint the things that he had seen. Kandinsky in his description of his inspirations gives a nearly exact definition of abstract art, that abstract art is in fact music composed of color spots.
If Kandinsky was the composer of classic symphonies, then Moshe Lieder with his bold and dramatic colors composes more wild music, as his color spots clash into each other like waves on the sea, that the colors spray everywhere almost threating to wet the viewer at any given moment.
Despite the storm that is happening on the canvas, the final result is mysteriously harmonious and balanced. In almost every painting, we can see that Lieder has a conversation with artists that inspired him.
Kandinsky is not the only influence on Moshe Leider as we can see the inspiration of the action painting artists of New York lead by Jackson Pollock, for example, the paint drips that appear in many of the paintings in this book are like a friendly wave from an adoring student to his teacher.
In terms of form, the decisive brushstrokes, especially in the large paintings in this book, are reminiscent of the dark and dramatic paintings of Antoni Täpies, the Spanish painter. In spite of the many references to great artists that came before, Leider also has his own unique elements that are totally his, especially his use of glass color swatches that transform into dramatic and nearly transparent at the edges, and become dark and almost threatening in puddles of paint in the center of the canvas.
In using these different techniques in a combination that is irreplaceable, blending his influences from important artists that came before him with new and exciting elements, we can see that Leider is an important artist, whose many exhibitions worldwide and work won him recognition in Austria and the United States. Moshe Leider is not just a passing phenomenon, but is one of the most important abstract artists of our times.
