Clémentine Verlaine

France • 1993

A unique approach that blurs the boundaries between past and future, real and imaginary, while offering a subtle critique of contemporary social norms.

Biography

Clémentine Verlaine is a contemporary French artist known for her bold style that blends classical references with contemporary and surrealist elements. Born in Marseille in 1993, Clémentine grew up in a family of artisans and poets, exposing her to a rich artistic and literary tradition from a young age.

Education and Early Life
After studying fine arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts in Paris, Clémentine initially explored classicism, mastering the oil painting techniques used by the old masters. However, her desire to explore the tensions between past and present soon led her to integrate modern and sometimes provocative elements into her work. Her early works, exhibited in independent galleries in Montmartre, already mixed mythological characters with everyday objects.

Artistic Style
Clémentine Verlaine’s style is marked by a striking juxtaposition: compositions that recall the great works of Baroque and Romantic masters, but with modern intrusions, such as futuristic weapons, pop culture figures or absurd scenes. This unique approach blurs the boundaries between past and future, real and imaginary, while offering a subtle critique of contemporary social norms. Her works arouse both admiration and controversy, particularly for their ability to blend eroticism, humor and political reflection.

Recognition
Clémentine quickly gained international recognition through exhibitions in London, New York and Tokyo. In 2018, her painting “The Heroine of Anachronism” was sold at auction, solidifying her reputation among collectors and critics. In 2022, she was invited to participate in the Venice Biennale, where her immersive installation was widely acclaimed.

Personal Life
Clémentine lives and works in a studio in Montmartre, surrounded by her two cats, stacks of books on art history and sketches of her upcoming projects. Inspired by philosophy, poetry and social issues, she continues to produce works that defy conventions and captivate viewers around the world.
