Jean-Michel Cierniewski, born in 1946, is a French painter and visual artist renowned for his unique approach to figurative art. His work is characterized by pieces that defy appearances, inviting the viewer to explore beyond the visible image. His compositions, often described as "trompe-l'œil," create landscapes that are both real and unreal, evoking opera sets or uninhabited planets.
In addition to his artistic career, Cierniewski played an important role in the teaching of art history. He was a professor at the School of Applied Arts, then at the National School of Fine Arts in Lyon, as well as at the University of Fashion at the University of Lyon II. He also served as a lecturer, sharing his knowledge on the analysis and interpretation of works of art from different eras.
Throughout his career, Cierniewski has participated in approximately fifty solo exhibitions in Europe, Canada, and the United States. He has also participated in international contemporary art fairs in Paris, Brussels, Basel, and Stockholm. His works are included in public collections, including those of the French government, the cities of Lyon, Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, Givors, Annecy, and Bollène, as well as the Museums of Mâcon and the Museum of Fine Arts and Natural History of Lyon.
As an art critic, he contributed to the Visual Arts section of "Lyon-Poche" from 1972 to 1979, and curated exhibitions in the Rhône-Alpes region and Montreal. His involvement in the art world also extends to monumental works and public acquisitions, reflecting his significant influence in the artistic field.
In short, Jean-Michel Cierniewski is an artist whose work challenges the imagination, offering compositions that invite deep contemplation and reflection on the nature of reality and illusion.
