Joan Fontcuberta

Joan Fontcuberta was born in 1955 in Barcelona, where he lives and works. One of Spain's most prominent and innovative artists, Joan Fontcuberta is best known for exploring the interstices between art, science, and illusion. Where science reaches its limits in his works, the imagination frequently finds a creative space in which to flourish. With nearly four decades of prolific dedication to photography, he has developed a both artistic and theoretical work, which focuses on the conflicts between nature, technology, photography and truth.

Joan Fontcuberta is one of the most inventive contemporary photographers, with an over 30-year achievement of constantly investigating and questioning the photographic medium. His work is distinguished by original and playful conceptual approaches that particularly explore photographic conventions, means of representation and claims to truth. He challenges concepts of science and fiction in interdisciplinary projects that extend far beyond the gallery space. In addition to his photographic practice, Joan Fontcuberta's capacities as a writer, teacher and curator have been greatly inspirational to the younger generation.

He has done solo shows at New York MoMA, Chicago Art Institute or Valencia IVAM among others, and his work has been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), San Francisco MoMA, National Gallery of Art (Ottawa), Folkwang Museum (Essen), Musée National d'Art Contemporain – Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), MACBA (Barcelona), MNCARS (Madrid) and others. Joan Fontcuberta is since 2008 the President of the Visual Artists Association in Catalonia.
