Biography

Atipalku Intjalki is an Australian Aboriginal artist from the Pitjantjatjara people, born in 1955 and living in the desert community of Pukatja in South Australia. She is part of the historic Ernabella Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Pukatja.

Atipalku Intjalki is the matriarch of a highly regarded family of artists from Ernabella. She was born in Ernabella and began working at the art center over fifty years ago, spinning wool and weaving rugs. Atipalku went on to excel in creating batik pieces and is also an accomplished tjanpi weaver, punu (wood) artist, and painter.

Atipalku's husband, Adrian Intjalki, was a renowned Punu artist, and her son, Jeffrey Lewis, is renowned for his bird paintings. Atipalku's three daughters, Michelle Lewis, Lynette Lewis, and Langaliki Lewis, are all highly sought-after for their paintings and ceramics.

Atipalku's works are held in major public collections in Australia and overseas, such as the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, and the British Museum in London (UK).
