Janmar

Jean-Marie Chassé, aka Janmar was born in 1974 in Meulan, Yvelines. Today, the artist has his own studio in Rezé, near Nantes. « Janmar » is a memory, the painter's nickname since his childhood. He always liked to draw, but Janmar turned towards sciences initially. After obtaining his undergraduate studies, he turned towards Beaux Arts, Orleans. He obtained the national supérieur d’études plastique diploma. This course highlighted advertising and new technologies and made him hope for a career in graphic designing. Too artistic but not very technique, he gave up this path "too much computer technology and graphics, I needed to be in contact with the material, from which painting came into being".

He then began painting for himself, then encouraged by a gallery owner, he began selling his work. While working as a delivery driver, he wandered in the streets of Paris: this is when he began painting cities, with imaginary emphasis, far from reality. Surrealistic, dreamlike, his paintings are narrative as well: in enchanted cities, characters are staged and tell stories filled with poetry. Composed of acrylic painting and collages, the canvases of the artist have several details and each of his work makes sense.

The artist regularly exhibits his work in several French galleries.
