Biographie

Né en 1944, Sebastião Salgado est un photojournaliste et un photographe de documentaires sociaux brésilien. Célèbre pour ses photographies en noir et blanc qui capturent des paysages vierges et des communautés indigènes, Salgado utilise son art pour encourager la préservation de l'environnement et la coexistence de l'humanité et de la nature.  

Salgado a d'abord travaillé comme économiste, après avoir obtenu son doctorat à l'Université de Paris. Après de nombreux voyages en Afrique, il s'est intéressé à la photographie et a changé d'orientation professionnelle en 1973.

Les photographies sans compromis de Salgado lui ont valu une reconnaissance internationale. Il a reçu des distinctions du Brésil, de Monaco et de la France. En 2021, il reçoit le Praemium Imperiale de la Japanese Art Association.

Outre ses activités artistiques, Salgado est un défenseur actif de l'environnement. Il a réussi à transformer près de 7 000 acres de la forêt amazonienne en réserve naturelle. Salgado est « UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador » depuis 2001.
