Ai-Wen Wu Kratz is a naturalized U.S. citizen, originally from Hong Kong. She received her art education mostly in the U.S. She attributes her visual fluency to her ethnic roots, and her opennes to the correlations between fields. For example, in her view, Daniel Barenboim's emphasis on pauses in music parallels to the negative space in visual art. In both instances, absence is not a void, but an integral part of a whole.
She finds great interest in literature, contemporary stage design, choreographic lines in dance and the marvel of vocal art. In her work, she purposely delivers no specific messages. It is the spiritual and intellectual qualities that she is aiming at with colors, lines, shapes, forms and movements. Kratz had one-person exhibitions in the U.S, France, Germany, England, Egypt and Austria.
