De Stijl
De Stijl, translated as “The Style", was a Dutch artistic movement that was active from 1917 until the 1930s. Also known as “Neoplasticism," the movement consisted of architects and artists. The style is characterized by pure abstraction, leaving only the essential elements of form and color. Paintings therefore often represented horizontal and vertical lines, using black, white and primary colors. Some of the principal members of De Stijl include Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck and Gerrit Rietveld.
De Stijl was active as an artistic and design movement at the same time as Kasimir Malevich's suprematism and the Bauhaus style, and similarities can be drawn between each of these movements in their use of abstraction. Primary colors and straight lines were often employed by artists from these movements, and these visual elements were intensified and further restricted by the artists of De Stijl. Join us and discover the artists of Neoplasticism, as well contemporary creators who find inspiration in the legendary movement of abstraction such as Olivier DeGroote and Tic!
