Inspired by Miles Johnston

Born in 1993, Miles Johnston is a young artist and studio instructor currently working in southern Sweden. Born in Borneo, he has lived in many countries including the United Kingdom and is currently settled in Sweden in the pursuit of his training in art. His works are conceived as open-ended visual metaphors for the viewer to contemplate and situate themselves within. As a playful, Salvador Dalí-esque, emerging artist, Johnston creates work that is popular within the tattooist scene.

Moreover, Johnston works primarily in graphite and oil, using the human form as a vehicle to attempt to address the intensity and deep anxiety of the collective human experience in the Surrealist style. The distortions and transformations his subjects undergo serve to represent the experience of our internal state at defining moments in our lives. Instead of focusing on literal representations of the world, he depicts the surreal qualities and abstract nature of our subjectivity in order to create works with deep emotional resonance. Over the past two years, his work has found an online audience and has begun to be exhibited internationally, culminating in his solo show in New York at Last Rites Gallery in 2018.
