Créée en 1959 aux États-Unis par le couple Handler, la Barbie devient la poupée indétrônable. Les plus grands stylistes sont contactés pour la création de la garde-robe de cette poupée, destinée dans un premier temps aux petites filles. Barbie est présentée pour la première fois au public via la télévision : c’est un véritable succès. Peu à peu, elle arrive en Europe et séduit le monde entier. Barbie évolue au fil du temps, et cette poupée de 29 cm de haut devient la représentation de la femme idéale, au corps parfait selon les nomes de la société, jolie blonde aux yeux bleus. Malgré ce manque de diversité, elle est mise en scène dans différentes situations de la vie quotidienne. Sa pratique de plusieurs métiers donne alors envie aux jeunes filles de se dépasser. Aujourd’hui Barbie est une icône pop et une source de création pour les artistes, comme Nathalie Roux ou Bruno Boffa, qui réaliseront des œuvres d’art à son image.
