Esthétique africaine
Comment définir l'esthétique africaine ? Est-il seulement possible de définir l'identité d'un continent composé de 54 pays, ayant chacun sa propre culture, ses propres traditions et ses propres structures sociales ? Une certitude s'impose, la diversité géographique est forcément à l'origine d'une pluralité d'artistes, aux styles et influences variées.
Le mouvement littéraire de la négritude, dirigé par les écrivains Aimé Césaire, Léon Damas et Léopold Sédar Senghor, a joué un rôle important dans le développement de l'art moderne africain. Il est fondé en 1937 par un groupe d'étudiants et artistes africains à Paris, qui est alors une ville dotée d'une scène artistique tolérante et diversifiée. Puis, le mouvement s'est développé à l'échelle mondiale. Il visait surtout à critiquer le colonialisme et à cultiver une appréciation de la culture noire et africaine, nécessaire au développement de la scène artistique africaine contemporaine.
Selon Léopold Sédar Senghor, pour que l'art africain progresse, il devait refléter la modernité du présent en répondant aux questions sociales et aux styles artistiques contemporains, tout en célébrant la culture traditionnelle. En s'inspirant également d'autres mouvements modernistes tels que la Harlem Renaissance et le surréalisme, l'esthétique de l'art visuel africain se concentre sur ces principes. Aujourd'hui, elle est véhiculée par des artistes comme Angu Walters, qui se concentre sur la vie quotidienne dans les villages africains. Quant à Faie Davis, elle cherche à utiliser son objectif pour capter l'appréciation de ceux qui conservent la tradition.
