Icônes américaines
Depuis le milieu du XXe siècle, les États-Unis sont devenus le leader du marché de l'art. L'attribution du Lion d'or à l'Américain Rauschenberg à la Biennale de Venise en 1964 témoigne du changement de prestige de l'école de Paris à celle de New York. Aujourd'hui, en plus de son vaste réseau de musées aux collections remarquables, New York possède la plus forte concentration d'artistes, ce qui se traduit par l'ADN extrêmement créatif de la ville.
Parmi les icônes américaines de la sphère artistique qui peuvent venir à l'esprit figurent les grands noms de l'art contemporain : Edward Hopper, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Georgia O'Keeffe, Man Ray, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring... Norman Rockwell, par exemple, est connu pour sa façon de raconter des histoires. Il a su présenter une description réaliste de la vie quotidienne derrière la façade du rêve américain. Jean-Michel Basquiat, de son côté, a rendu possible l'élévation de l'art urbain au rang des beaux-arts. Ces icônes artistiques américaines ont ouvert la voie aux icônes actuelles telles que Shepard Fairey, JonOne et Jeff Koons.
