Portraitistes abstraits
L'imprévisibilité du comportement humain est une aubaine pour l'expressionnisme abstrait. En effet, les changements d'humeur soudains, les regards brefs et les expressions inconstantes du visage défient les lois strictes du réalisme. Dans ce cas, pourquoi l'art devrait-il, lui, toujours représenter le réel ?
Dans l'art figuratif, l'art du portrait peut être décrit comme une représentation fixe et posée d'une figure humaine à un moment donné. Mais l'être humain n'est jamais parfaitement immobile ! Même pendant les séances de pose, il est toujours dynamique et en mouvement, ce qui est impossible à retranscrire sur la toile… à moins de s'éloigner du réalisme ! En utilisant la lumière, la couleur, les formes et les techniques mixtes, l'art abstrait crée du mouvement sur la toile elle-même, faisant écho au dynamisme du sujet lui-même. Les artistes abstraits, tels que Theo van Doesburg et son œuvre de 1915, utilisent des blocs de couleur et des formes libres pour sculpter ce que nous reconnaissons ensuite comme étant une figure humaine. Mais, à l'inverse de l'art figuratif, le portrait abstrait est déconstruit et semble se déplacer sur la toile. S'attendant à voir un visage, le spectateur utilise son œil et son intellect pour reconstituer le portrait, retrouver la figure dans l'œuvre.
De nos jours, Shay Mess associe des visages féminins à la nature pour créer des portraits floraux, saturés de couleurs, attirant inéluctablement le spectateur. Quant à Mario Henrique, il se concentre sur la nature fugace du corps humain en représentant des danseurs.
