Nelio

Born in 1982, Nelio is a self-taught artist who works both in public spaces and in the studio. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and painted murals in major cities across various continents. His work oscillates between formal minimalism and abstract expressionism, while at times approaching figuration, with increasingly pronounced references to the notion of landscape.

His minimalist and refined creations, particularly in public spaces, draw inspiration from architecture and its geometric rhythms, as well as from nature and its chromatic nuances. His murals blend harmoniously into their surroundings, seeming to extend them toward distant horizons. Nelio also explores this minimalism in his bas-reliefs, sculptures, and installations, created from assemblages of natural or reclaimed materials.

In contrast, his expressionist paintings are characterized by their density: alternating between additions, overlays, and erasures, they delve into the complexities of interiority, exploring the variations between form and formlessness. This approach is especially evident in his studio works and uncommissioned outdoor paintings, where a largely subconscious process—guided by gesture and spontaneity—leaves the works open to unpredictability.

The artist also produces intermediary pieces within evolving series that he refines over time. This process enables him to blur boundaries without entirely disorienting the viewer, interweaving divergent practices to allow opposing ideas to coexist. In the same spirit, he avoids assigning definitive meaning to his works, opening them to individual projection and interpretation.

For Nelio, abstraction is not a discourse but the language of the unspeakable: an aesthetic of lines, shapes, lights and colors that reflects our inner worlds and the landscapes of our existential paradoxes.
