Numérique
Le terme numérique fait référence à la technologie électronique utilisée pour générer, stocker et traiter les données. Celles-ci peuvent être divisées en données positives ou non positives. Les données positives sont représentées par le chiffre 1 et les données non positives par le chiffre 0. Lorsque les données sont stockées ou transmises, elles sont communiquées sous la forme d'une chaîne de 1 ou de 0. Chacun de ces chiffres est attribué comme un bit. Lorsqu'une chaîne de bits est regroupée, on l'appelle un octet.
Avant l'essor de la numérisation, la technologie analogique était la principale utilisée pour transmettre l'électricité. Cette forme de technologie communique les données sous forme de signaux électroniques, à des amplitudes et des fréquences différentes afin de transmettre des ondes porteuses. Historiquement, l'analogique a été la principale technologie utilisée pour diffuser la télévision et administrer les appels téléphoniques.
Au-delà de la technologie numérique elle-même, la numérisation a eu un impact massif sur la culture populaire et les pratiques sociales. À l'heure actuelle, les populations utilisent des outils numériques pour communiquer entre elles sur les téléphones portables, les réseaux sociaux, etc. De nos jours, la technologie numérique est surtout utilisée pour les moyens de communication. Cette forme de média nécessite une transmission par satellite et par fibre optique. Les données numériques sont converties d'un ordinateur à l'aide d'un modem en signaux analogiques sur les lignes téléphoniques. Le numérique est également utilisé pour convertir les signaux téléphoniques analogiques en informations numériques sur les ordinateurs. Les outils numériques, bien qu'invisibles, sont illimités et maintiennent le monde numérique en vie.
