Young British Artists (YBAs)
Les Young British Artists (YBAs), également connus sous le nom de Brit artists ou Britart, sont un groupe d'artistes visuels britanniques. La première exposition collective qui est aujourd'hui associée au mouvement a eu lieu en 1988 à Londres. La majorité des artistes présentés étaient des diplômés du cours BA Fine Arts de l'université Goldsmiths. Dirigée par Damien Hirst, la première exposition a tout de suite attiré l'attention du public. Intitulée Freeze, elle a eu lieu dans une caserne de pompiers vide des Docklands de Londres. L'exposition était audacieuse, provocante et dirigée par les artistes, établissant la norme pour les expositions suivantes et la manière dont le groupe sera reconnu dans le monde de l'art. Le groupe a attiré l'attention du collectionneur d'art Charles Saatchi dès ce premier événement, qui a ensuite soutenu et collectionné les œuvres de nombreux artistes du groupe.
Bien que le groupe d'artistes associés aux YBAs ne soit pas fixe et qu'il ait constamment changé depuis la création du mouvement, certaines des figures de proue sont identifiables, comme par exemple Damien Hirst et Tracey Emin. Parmi les œuvres les plus célèbres produites par le groupe, citons The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living de Hirst, qui est un requin conservé dans un réservoir en verre rempli de formaldéhyde, et My Bed d'Emin, une installation d'un lit double défait, entouré de désordre.
