Paesaggi poetici
Sebbene appartengano a una lunga tradizione della pittura europea, i paesaggi poetici come genere possono essere percepiti come complessi. Si dice spesso che questo genere abbia elevato lo status di acquerello, offrendo il spettatore un quadro immaginario. L’artista, infatti, ha tutta la libertà possibile per rappresentare un mondo fantastico. Ad esempio, può aggiungere rovine di architettura romana in un'area di montagna dove non ce n'erano . Idealizzando e modificando i paesaggi, artisti come Richard Wilson hanno ridisegnato gli edifici ed esagerato i paesaggi caratteristiche geografiche, ignorando l'accuratezza della realtà.
Come notato dall'autore W.G. Leszl, questo genere si basa sulla teoria dell'estetica proposta da Aristotele nella sua opera Poetica. Secondo lui, la realtà è imperfetta, quindi l'arte deve ispirarsi a qualcosa di idealizzato, che incarni proporzioni armoniose e può essere utilizzato per esprimere idee morali elevate. Anche nell’arte contemporanea il paesaggio poetico non ha detto la sua ultima parola. Poiché il rapporto tra la natura e coloro che la abitano diventa sempre più teso, artisti come Salvatore Mangione (Salvo) e Nick Vivian raffigurano il paesaggio nella sua forma più semplice, come a ricordarci la fonte della nostra esistenza.
