Boris Eldagsen, a German artist born in 1970, has embarked on a fascinating journey that explores the intersections of art, photography, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). His extensive studies in photography, art, and philosophy have shaped his multidisciplinary approach to creating thought-provoking visual narratives. Drawing inspiration from the subconscious, Eldagsen ventures into uncharted territory, using AI to generate photorealistic images that he calls "images." These creations, although employing the visual language of photography, exist outside the realm of traditional photographs.

Eldagsen's artistic vision has captivated audiences worldwide, with his works showcased in prestigious galleries such as Fridericianum Kassel, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, and the Vanabbemuseum Eindhoven. He received critical acclaim and recognition when he won the Prix Voies Off in 2013, solidifying his position as a talented artist with a unique perspective.
In recent years, Eldagsen has embraced the potential of AI as a creative tool. Since 2022, he has been experimenting with AI-generated images, meticulously refining the output through techniques like In- and Out-Painting. However, Eldagsen's artistic exploration took an unexpected turn when he embarked on a daring experiment. Seeking to provoke dialogue on the ethical implications of AI-generated images, he submitted his creations to prestigious photography competitions, including the renowned Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA). Transparent about his use of AI, Eldagsen aimed to challenge the distinction between AI-generated art and traditional photography.

To his surprise, one of his AI-generated images titled "The Electrician" from his series "Pseudomnesia: Fake Memories" was selected as the winner in the Creative category of the SWPA. This accolade came with significant recognition and rewards. However, Eldagsen made a bold and unexpected choice: he declined the award.
His decision to decline the prize was a deliberate act to ignite a broader conversation about the implications of AI in photography. Eldagsen believed that the art community needed an open and honest dialogue to define clear boundaries and establish terminology for AI-generated images.
