Biography
Robert Robinson is an American artist born in 1960 who lives and works in London, UK. He creates 3-D media artworks using comic book encyclopedias. With a conceptual approach, various overlapping themes and strategies are presented. Various subject matter can be recognised, such as the relationship of pop culture and media, the juxtaposition of good versus evil, and imagery evoking memories from our past. By using current popular theme of the super hero, he tries to create a novel way in which to display comic book art. Robert uses the comic book artwork in a multi- layered way, setting the stage to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes whimsical. The character, shape or content of the presented artwork is secondary. By applying specific combinations and certain manipulations, different functions and/or contexts are created. Each comic book sculpture is configured with the characters from the book itself. The images are stabilized in place. The book is sealed in order to protect the design and is fitted with a perspex pane behind the cover. The artwork is ready-to-hang and signed by the artist. His works often refers to pop and mass culture. Using drawn symbols, a world where light-heartedness rules is created.
