Presentation

Contemporary visual artist Faig Ahmed was born in 1982, in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan.

Upon leaving the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts in 2004 where he studied sculpture, Ahmed went on to produce artworks in various different mediums, such as video and installation. However, it is his surrealist sculptural weavings and textiles for which he is most renowned; indeed, he represented Azerbaijan in its first Venice Biennale in 2007 and has since exhibited his work across the world.

Ahmed applies visual distortions to traditional islamic decorative craft, transforming ancient objects into pieces of contemporary art. Carpets are woven in accordance with centuries-old traditional Azerbaijani weaving techniques, while a variety of techniques are employed to create the optical illusions, such as warping, glitching, melting, pixelating and unraveling. Ahmed thinks of his art as an experiment, and of himself as an explorer, and the end result is mesmerising, with incredibly engaging 3D and psychedelic effects.

It is the embodiment of the historic meeting the contemporary; fabric, patterns and ornaments have been used across cultures and throughout time, and Ahmed's works engage with such tradition in brilliantly unusual and modern ways. Ahmed's work deconstructs traditions and stereotypes, drawing on a rich cultural heritage to reinterpret ancient crafts for contemporary art and create new visual boundaries.
