Presentation

This contemporary Chinese artist is a point of reference in the world of Chinese painting thanks not only to his rare talent but also by way of his personal history which, on its own, resonates with many of the political events of the twentieth century. Who is this man, now established in Toulouse with more than fifty years of successful artistic career behind him, whose influences are both oriental and occidental?

Jiao Jia Ou Yang was born into a family of intellectuals in Shanghai in 1947. At the time, relations between France and China were limited, but a few works of great masters like Gaugin and Monet did reach the country and were able to influence the artists there. Jiao Jia Ou Yang therefore received an artistic education of some kind even from a very young age. By thirteen he was already studying Chinese painting and ink techniques from a master. In 1963 in he was accepted onto the communications pathway at the prestigious fine arts school in Shanghai where he learnt the basic techniques of graphics and perfected his budding paintbrush techniques. He and his new skills were employed by those in power to create pieces of propaganda which allowed him to live and buy the materials to continue creating. At the time, only artists who worked for the state were considered legitimate.

When Mao died in 1967, the country began to open up. Jiao Jia Ou Yang finished his studies in 1968 and began to exhibit his works in galleries across the country. He emigrated to Toulouse in France in 1988 and took a course in fine arts to begin to get into abstract art, where he developed his personal style which he defines as lyrical, colourful and gestural. He is greatly inspired by nature and has produced numerous oils on canvases, notably diptychs and triptychs, on the subject. Since the 2000s, Jiao Jia Ou Yang has received an array of prestigious prizes and exhibited across the world, in China as well as in major European cities. He has now started teaching the new generation and has published a book entitled 'Chinese Calligraphy'.
