A young prodigy, born in Shanghai in 1983, Mao Tongyan, is an avant-garde photographer, he graduated from Shanghai Normal University.
The artist transposes his childhood perception, the one which tries to sound out the discussions of his parents. From intimate to universal, his themes address crime issues in China, those which he heard during his childhood. The artist applies these questions on a piece of stone. He goes to one of the crime scenes and asks a prostitute disguised as a policeman, to take photos of her. His work emerges out of real stories, where Mao Tongyan takes pictures then prints the same thing on stone. The uniqueness of the process associates the substance with the form, the end result is disturbingly sensitive. Crime flirts with poetry.
The uniqueness of his approach entails true success. He has participated in several fairs and his work is exhibited all around the world.
