Presentation

Raymond Peynet was born on November 16, 1908 in Paris. At the age of 17, he entered the School of Applied Arts in Industry located just opposite his parents' bistro, rue Dupetit-Thouars in the 3rd arrondissement.

He came out first 3 years later and made his debut at Tolmer, an advertising agency in Paris, doing various jobs, designing perfume labels, decorating cake boxes, advertising inserts for pharmaceutical and medical products.

In 1930, he married Denise Damour, with the predestined name who became his muse, his inspiration and the mother of their only child Annie who was born in 1938. In the early 1930s he published his first drawings in an English magazine, The Boulevardier then collaborated with various newspapers and magazines such as Le Rire, while continuing his work in the advertising field, a sector that he would never leave. He then began to produce his first book illustrations, Labiche, Anouilh, Daudet, Musset, Courteline etc.

It was in 1942 in front of the Valence bandstand that he imagined this little couple of lovers, a violinist and his admirer. Peynet gives it as caption You can leave leave I'll finish on my own and sends it to Ric et rac. Editor-in-chief Max Favalelli publishes it under the title Les Amoureux de Peynet and thus gives birth to this little pair of lovers who will never leave Peynet… and who will go around the world!

From 1943 and until the end of his life, Peynet will pursue a multiple and fruitful career, press cartoonist, he also produces many theater sets and costumes, jewelry, porcelain, fabrics, advertisements, film posters , record covers… and the famous dolls, which enjoyed phenomenal success (5 million copies sold in Europe!) between 1953 and 1968, Peynet produced 250 different models.

Currently, 4 museums are dedicated to them: Antibes, Brassac les Mines, Karuizawa (Nagano - Japan) and Sakuto-cho (Okayama - Japan). He died in his 90th year, January 14, 1999...
