Presentation

Born in 1958 in Saint-Etienne. He lives and works in Cannes.

After studying humanities at Université Sainte-Anne in Canada, Joël Cuoq embarked on a long journey that would take him from North America to South America, where he would first discover Indian civilizations, then Aztecs. , Maya and Inca, which will have a great influence on his future work as an artist.

In 1980, he moved to San Francisco. It was during repeated stays in New York that he learned to know and appreciate modern and contemporary art. In 1986, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked in the manufacture of decorations for the windows of large shops in Beverly Hills.

Back in France in 1989, he settled on the Côte d'Azur, where he still lives. Continuing his work as an artist, he is particularly influenced by Free Figuration, Primitive Arts and comics and exhibits regularly in the region.

In 2009, Joël Cuoq developed a new technique for creating images: the Press Paper Cube Mosaic.

Inspired by pixelation and photomosaic, his works have a unique visual rendering and are composed of a myriad of small cubes, each cube being a compressed magazine page. By playing on the thickness of each cube, on its color, the artist encourages a lateral reading of the image. Relief and 3D accentuate the light effects. He tackles several ideas that are dear to him: recycling that brings magazines back to life, collage and the art of mosaics.
