The horsehair technique is a type of artisanal weaving which consists of the concentric interlacing of horsehair and vegetable fiber, the circle being the main form of this unique practice. The craftsmen generally make decorative pieces such as jewelry and creations in the image of emblematic local figures, as well as working circles from 2 to 12 cm in diameter. For the first pieces of the lamps woven in horsehair (2018), Paula, Mitsue and Pilar rethought this traditional practice by working a weave in circles 25 cm in diameter, and choosing natural colors such as white horsehair in order to better understand the peculiarities of the material and to highlight the technique through the use of light.

Invited by the British Council, Paula and Mitsue led the Crafting Future residency in Chile where they worked with 10 women artisans from Rari, including Pilar Véjar. During this residency, Paula and Mitsue understood the importance of using color in practice for artisans to express their feelings and knowledge. So in 2020 and 2021 they designed a new collection of horsehair lamps, where they incorporated a palette of reds, showing the change in color intensity depending on the color of the ixtle ( fiber extracted from agave). For this new collection, they also want to explore different finishes of the technique, following their work on the Crin Weaving Long Structure Lamp in 2018.

In this context, Paula and Mitsue integrate the materiality and the traditional technique of the craft with contemporary proposals, generating a symbiosis in which both ideas are enhanced. Community, collaboration and tradition all come together in the work done by Lamps from Chile. A mix between high-tech processes and tradition, generating a network of co-authors, where the designer and the craftsman depend on each other fairly for the reproduction of the pieces. A conversation between design, functionality and heritage.

Lamps from Chile is a collaborative project of contemporary Chilean craftsmanship and design, formed by designers Paula Corrales, Mitsue Kido and artisan Pilar Véjar. This project aims to maintain the traditions and production processes of craftsmanship, in particular the horsehair weaving of the community of the village of Rari, through the design of pieces of contemporary design.

For their first collection, they collaborated with 5 communities of artisans in the Maule region: Pita de Teno, Coirón de Uraco, Crin de Rari, Piedra Toba de Quinamávida and Greda Blanca de Vichuquén.
