Inspired by Rembrandt

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker and draught maker. His artistic œuvre has been and still is extremely influential on the art world. He is widely considered one of the most important artists in history and the single most important in Dutch art history. His all-encompassing mastery in the three medias matched his versatility in terms of subject matter. He depicted many subjects; from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, and biblical and mythological themes.

Rembrandt's greatest triumphs were his portraits of his contemporaries, his self-portraits and illustrations from the Bible. His self portraiture is particularly able to convey an unprecedented sincerity and intimacy. Rembrandt was able to depict himself in an earnest way without the interference of vanity.

Towards the end of his career, Rembrandt experienced personal tragedy and hardship. His drawings, paintings and prints, however, remained popular throughout the rest of his life and his reputation as an artist remained intact. His artistry continues to inspire contemporary artists who keep the image of Rembrandt alive through their artwork.
