Pablo Picasso: Lithographs

Throughout the course of his career, Picasso produced over 2,400 prints. However, it wasn't until 1945, after he met Fernand Mourlot whose expertise in printing inspired Picasso, that the artist began to experiment with the technique of lithography

This method of printmaking uses a stone or flat surface drawn on with an oily substance to transfer the ink onto a sheet of paper. Up until this point, the majority of the artist's prints had been in black and white, but lithography allowed him to create prints with color. Picasso experimented with new techniques such as finger painting and created new plates from collage and mixed media, which not only worked excellently in his artworks, but also pushed the boundaries of the medium.

His printmaking career expanded his artistic legacy, leaving behind 350 lithographic prints in the two decades he worked with Mourlot. Within these pieces he experimented with a range of concepts and subjects, from daily life to portraiture, and reproduced many of his older paintings as prints. By producing limited edition prints, the artist was able to open up his work to a larger audience, whilst still retaining the quality and rarity of each piece. Much of the Picasso market today is made up of his prints due to the amount that he produced over his lifetime. A purchase of a lithograph from this legendary artist is a sure investment.
