Yoshinori Tanaka, Meikyo Yamato-damashii Shibuya

About the artwork

Artwork sold in perfect condition

Amazing print with cultural and architectural icons from Tokyo (Shibuya). With some gloss and glitter as well! In this work, Yoshinori pays homage to the famous Japanese artist from the 19th century, Kyosai KAWANABE, and his work "Meikyo Yamato damashii shinpan." In Yoshinori's version, the work is pixelized, which is his signature style, and the scene takes place in the middle of Shibuya, Tokyo. One can see the famous monuments of Shibuya and Japan, such as the Hachiko dog and the 109 shopping mall. In particular, the artist depicts the Halloween night in Shibuya, which is known to be a chaotic night for the city since the famous crossing becomes full of costumed people and there are normally quite a few incidents involving the police. This mixture of Japanese and western cultures is also a reflection of the artist, Kyosai KAWANABE, where he resisted the rapid westernization of Japan during the Meiji period.

Printmakers Artists

Born in Kyoto, Japan, now based in Tokyo, Yoshinori works under the theme of “Street Ethernet Field" which is a crossover of his personal memories and feelings and the “Japanese myths" which he transforms into records of general interests and rational minds. He blurs the boundaries between the clubbing and otaku culture.

Yoshinori Tanaka has had solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan. In 2017, he won the Grand Prize of the "Kyoro International Film and Art Festival 2017", and the second prize of the "12th Tagboat Award".
