Shepard Fairey: Posters

Shepard Fairey, also known under the alias OBEY, is a street artist, muralist and illustrator born in 1970 in Charleston, US. He became familiar with the world of graphic design very early on: at the age of 14 he began drawing images to print on t-shirts and skateboards.

As an art student at the Rhode Island School of Design, Fairey and a group of other students created a series of stickers and posters using the image of boxer André the Giant which unexpectedly went viral (one of the first ever street art campaigns to do so) and ultimately propelled him to notoriety.

Since then, Fairey has produced a prolific portfolio of artworks in his bold iconic style, based on stylized and idealized images. Blending the iconic imagery of Andy Warhol's Pop Art with Alexander Rodtchenko's Russian Constructivism, his artwork is not only compelling and energetic, but instantly recognizable.

Arguably Fairey's most famous work is his poster of Barack Obama released during the US presidential campaign in 2008. This artwork consisted of a stylized image of the former president juxtaposed with the word "HOPE" inscribed underneath. Like this poster, many of Fairey's artworks promote unity and political activism.
