ENTR’ACTE is the new exhibition by Swiss artist Gabriele Fettolini at PontArte in Maastricht. The exhibition can be visited from Thursday 4 November till 30 November. The exhibition was actually scheduled for April 2020, but has been rescheduled several times due to the pandemic. Now the time has come:
An abstract play of light and dark, colour and blurring, form and composition, that is what typifies Fettolini’s work. The Swiss, who has divided his time between Barcelona and Switzerland since the 80s, has made a number of compositions for this exhibition that has been given the title Entre’acte. Works on paper and canvas in different sizes form the “gap” that Fettolini wants us to experience.
In French, Entre’acte literally means an entertainment between 2 parts in a play or opera. Often it’s dance or music. Fettolini has taken this fact as a starting point for his paintings; The works are an expression of “the depiction and the result, the beginning and the end of a work” according to Fettolini. Metaphorically, an Entre’acte is a space between 2 parts in which many things can happen. That makes it exciting for the artist and for the viewer.
The paper works (on wooden panels) that can be seen show the fragile and volatile space; they leave a trace before they disappear again. In many of Fettolini’s works, this fact is reflected, as well as the variation and composition, which can be adapted again and again.
