On January 26th, 2023, Gallery Lau hosted the highly anticipated opening of the exhibition “Dans la Lumière” by French artist Marie-Amélie Chéreau at the Goldberg Studio in Munich. The event attracted a cosmopolitan crowd of art enthusiasts, critics, and collectors, eager to experience Chéreau’s unique artistic vision.
The Goldberg Studio, with its raw industrial aesthetic—exposed brick walls and lofty ceilings—provided a dramatic backdrop for Chéreau’s abstract expressionist works. The contrast between the rugged space and her vibrant, dynamic paintings enhanced the energy and emotional intensity of the exhibition. Chéreau’s work, deeply rooted in abstract expressionism, offers an emotional and sensory journey. Her palette-knife strokes, rich textures, and bold use of color create an immersive experience that invites the viewer to engage in their own creative process.
The collection showcased a series of large-scale, abstract oil paintings on canvas, each embodying a visual dialogue between light and form. Through sweeping gestures and radiant hues, Chéreau evokes both inner and outer landscapes, allowing the viewer to interpret and project their own emotions onto the canvas. The abstract nature of her work dissolves boundaries, encouraging guests to become creators of their own images and interpretations.
As the vibrant colors and flowing contrasts drew viewers into her ethereal worlds, the exhibition became a powerful exploration of the delicate balance between light and shadow, chaos and serenity. The guests were captivated by the way Chéreau’s abstract expressionism translates deep emotional states into visceral visual experiences, immersing them into spaces of reflection and personal discovery.
