Biography
Alberto Martini was born on November 24, 1876 in Oderzo and died in Milan on November 8, 1954.
He is a painter, print artist and illustrator and is considered to be a forerunner of surrealism.
In 1897, at the age of 21, his work is featured for the first time at the Venice Biennale; the artwork he presents is "La corte dei Miracoli", inspired by Victor Hugo ?s "Notre-Dame de Paris".
The illustration of famous literary masterpieces constitutes a very important part of his work.
His painting practice can be divided into two periods:
-The ?light period? (with an exhibition in Milan, in 1927) is marked by an almost abstract lyricism and refinement.
-The second period, the ?black manner?, a more sinister and apocalyptic vision takes over his work.
