Art Nouveau
L'Art nouveau è un'espressione internazionale movimento artistico, di design e di architettura che raggiunse il suo apice tra il 1890 e il 1910, durante il periodo della Belle Époque che precedette la Prima Guerra Mondiale. L'Art Nouveau rifiutava l'arte accademica del XIX secolo così come l'architettura e il design contemporanei, che prediligeva l'eclettismo e lo storicismo. L'Art Nouveau si ispirava invece al mondo naturale, alle sue forme e ai suoi colori. Caratteristiche comuni delle opere Art Nouveau sono l'asimmetria, le forme naturali dinamiche, il senso del movimento e i materiali moderni (metallo, ferro, vetro, ceramica o cemento).
Uno dei L'obiettivo principale del movimento Art Nouveau era quello di eliminare la gerarchia percepita tra le belle arti e le arti decorative. Mentre le belle arti, come la pittura e la scultura, occupava una posizione elevata nella classifica artistica tradizionale, le arti applicate non erano considerate arte "vera". L'Art Nouveau condivideva questo obiettivo con il movimento britannico Arts & ; Artigianato, da cui ha tratto ispirazione. Famosi esempi di opere in stile Art Nouveau includono gli ingressi delle stazioni della metropolitana parigina, i manifesti di grandi dimensioni di Alphons Mucha e le opere di architettura e design della Glasgow School, a cui ha partecipato l'architetto Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
