"Originally there was the image, which man succeeded in making appear in Antiquity by using a camera obscura, before succeeding, several centuries later, in fixing it permanently on a support thanks to the tenacity of inventors such as Nicéphore Nièpce. At the origin of the Paper Exploration series is, conversely, paper as a medium for transferring emulsions produced with a photographic chamber supplied with expired Polaroid films; because for several years, the photographer Diane Vo Ngoc has never ceased to go in search of artisanal papers from all over the world. Made from mulberry pulp, cotton rags, lokta bark, rice flour, cocoa pods, reed fibers, papyrus or even recycled fabric, these multipurpose papers are the point starting point of his photographic work. It consists in effect of creating, for each of them, the portrait of a woman from the same country of origin and dressed in a traditional costume, the latter having always been kept in the family of this one-day model. . Beyond a simple gallery of portraits, Diane Vo Ngoc's series invites us to discover or rediscover clothing customs, from one continent to another, from Angola to Korea, from Russia to Peru, from India to Japan. Wishing to nourish the memory of know-how, the photographer thus builds real bridges between the cultures of the world while making us aware of the importance of their preservation. By freezing in this way a moment in the history of each of its women, of each of these peoples, on a unique hand-crafted medium, the Paper Exploration series delicately illuminates the fragility of our heritage."
