Gracie Ward Napaltjarri

Australia • 1971

Biography

She is the daughter of George Ward Tjungurrayi, one of the Pintupi masters. She was born in 1971 or 1973. She began painting in 2004 under the instruction of her father and also her mother, Nangawarra Ward Napurrula, certainly less famous than her husband but nevertheless a well-known artist with a meticulous style. Her style took several years to assert itself. At first, the style was not personal enough to make a name for herself, but she learned her craft, taking more and more distance and mastering the techniques, the juxtaposition of colors and the sense of space better and better. At the end of 2009, her painting evolved to give birth to a warm, colorful painting with a careful, completely mastered technique (the realization is done only with skewers, without using the brush, even for circles or fairly wide bands). She lives in Warakurna, a very isolated Aboriginal community.
