Biography

Isadore Lévy (1899-1989) was a French-American painter with a fascinating career. Born in the United States, he moved to France in 1920 after winning a prestigious scholarship. He then became part of the artistic ferment of the École de Paris, exhibiting at the Salons des Indépendants, d'Automne, and des Tuileries. His style, initially influenced by academicism and the work of the Italian masters, evolved into a freer and more luminous style.

In the 1930s, he returned to the United States, where his work became simpler, adopting cleaner forms and a bolder palette. Returning to France in 1950, he deepened his exploration of color and texture, creating works in which light seems to spring from the material itself. Exhibited in Paris, New York, and at prestigious galleries such as Wildenstein and Vignon, his work demonstrates a constant search between figuration and abstraction.

A major retrospective was dedicated to him in 1989, a few months before his death, followed by a posthumous tribute at Maisons-Laffitte in 1990. Today, his work continues to seduce with its sensitivity and timeless modernity.
