Today, the art world has become increasingly accessible and democratised: there is a growing interest in living artists as well as emerging artists and in all types of art collectors. According to Thierry Ehrmann (Artprice), the number of art buyers has increased from 500 000 just after the Second World War, to more than 70 million today. In the 21st century, about 700 museums are built each year and there are enough contemporary art fairs for everyday of the year. From prestigious art fairs such as Art Basel, FIAC, Art Paris or Frieze, to smaller intimate fairs, each one has a role to play and may reveal many treasures. Like exhibitions or museums, art fairs allow us to get closer to the art world.
There have never been as many artists as there are today: huge quantities of artworks are created each year. It is a blessing for all art collectors and enthusiasts, who can finally carve out their own place in a once highly exclusive domain. The art market is moving fast, and it's one aspect of this world that makes it so exciting. There have been many unexpected developments in the history of art. There are a number of artists who although little known in their lifetime, now sell for millions. One of the best known examples is Van Gogh, who led a tragic and difficult life and only sold a single painting in his lifetime...
Artists who successfully left their mark on the history of art are often those who dared to think outside of the box and initiated or contributed to groundbreaking artistic movements. Artists also need to know how to appeal to wider audiences. Street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jef Aérosol, or JR have successfully won over the hearts of viewers all over the world. Of course, they are not the only ones; many other contemporary artists are much loved or at the very least well known by the public. The businessman Jeff Koons is the one everyone loves to hate, the most expensive artist living David Hockney is adored for his landscapes and the mysterious Banksy intrigues from audiences around the world.
From celebrity artists to record-breaking sales and a number of urban myths, the art market is not always easy to understand. With our themed selections, Artsper guides you through the world's important artistic events and introduces you to some of contemporary art's most famous artists.
