From Japan to France, the United Kingdom and Russia, contemporary art is flourishing all around the world. Despite this, the most renown (and most expensive) artists are usually from the West. Artsper offers an impressive collection of artworks from Spain, France, or Belgium by both famous and emerging artists like Pablo Picasso, JR or René Magritte. However, in a 21st-century globalized world things are now changing up, and art world is diversifying. Europe and the United States, while still the central hubs of the international art industry, are experiencing more competitions from emerging art markets like in China, Africa, or South-America which are developing at a fast pace. The digitalisation of the arts is making art from across the globe more accessible and is giving international emerging artists the opportunity to reach wider audience.
One of the international art scenes that particularly stands out today is undoubtedly the African art scene. Away from the “ethnic" or “primitive" aesthetic that was traditionally associated with African arts, contemporary African art is flourishing, and artists are finding their own identity. For example, Cameroonian artist Carole Onambélé Kvasnevski is celebrating women of Africa with her 100foulards portrait series. The artist sees the headscarves as a symbol of beauty and femininity. The intense black and white portraits by photographer John Kenny, captures the faces of people from West Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia in their traditional dress.
Across the Atlantic Ocean, the Central and Latin American contemporary art scenes are also fascinating. Famous artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera have left their mark on their country's artistic legacy, but there is much more to explore. Influenced by the social and political unrests that marred the continent's 20th-century history, artists draw inspiration from these events. For example, the Argentinian artist Roberto Jacoby uses the power of words to make political and social statements. His print series ¡1968, el culo te abrocho! plays with Spanish phrases and iconic pictures, newspapers, or books, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this historic year for the evolution of social attitudes.
Finally, Asia is another continent that is growing in importance today. Asian art has always fascinated the Western world. Already in the 19th century, Impressionists painters in France drew inspiration from Japanese arts, especially with Japanese prints “ukiyo-e" (literally “pictures of the floating world"), which gave rise to the “Japonism" movement. Today, famous contemporary artists like Takashi Murakami or Yayoi Kusama are leading figures in the global contemporary art scene. Inspired by the exuberant Japanese pop culture, their works are psychedelic and colourful. China has also been experiencing a genuine “boom" and artists like Huang Yan or Li Dongfeng are revisiting their country's artistic traditions and giving it a contemporary twist.
So whether you want to rediscover European classics or find artworks from the other side of the world, Artsper takes you on an artistic journey through the world's many cultures
