Presentation

Lilly Kelly Napangardi is a senior law woman of the Watiyawanu community, north-west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Lily won the Northern Territory Art Award in 1986, and the General Painting Category at the 20th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2003.

Depicting the Haasts Bluff and Mt Liebig regions - the traditional country of the artists and her Waitiyawanu community - her paintings hypnotise the viewer whilst immersing them in the beauty and subtle intricacies of her land. Lines and dots on the painted surface draw the viewer into deciphering these landscapes through the most subtle gestural shift.

Lilly has modified her pictorial style. With fine lines, she creates two-color paintings (one for the background and another one for the lines and points). She paints the dunes of the Kintore and the Conniston, the wind and the desert after the rain.

In 2006 Lilly Kelly Napangardi was selected on of the "50 most collectable Australian artists".
