Pierre Daquin

The artist, Pierre Daquin, who has been present in prestigious public collections for decades (Museum of Modern Art of Paris, Museum of Decorative Arts, Museum of Ixelles, etc.), does us honor to grant us one of his very rare exhibitions in our gallery.

Interface: surface at the boundary between two parts of matter or space. This simple definition sums up all the complexity of Pierre Daquin's work that has been driving him for more than 50 years.

He exerts it on different industrial materials (rubber canvas, vinyl, leather, plastic canvas...) in order to unveil the invisible undersides, the unexpected interiorities and relevance of reflection. Early in his career, he claims the concept of "Supple Art" that lies between the paint liquidity and the stiffness of the sculpture. In this way, we have the honor to exhibit a work of the vinyl collection that was displayed during his own exhibition Action/Pli at the MoMA of Paris (1974).

Always in his desire to unveil the unexpected, he takes an interest in kraft papers that protect artworks during transportation. Double sheets of kraft or kraft/aluminum with tarred interior, reinforced with hemp or nylon threads; together they constitute a formidable field of exploration. These papers are variously torn, split, hollowed out and painted with personal techniques, resulting from his encounters with the most unusual materials. This unique work is the essence of the exhibition at Galerie Lazarew.
