Barbara Rosé Joanny

Born in Saint-Denis on Reunion Island in 1982, Barbara Rosé Joanny is an entirely self-taught painter of the Conscious Art movement. Having trained as a musician, she became a composer and a piano teacher at the conservatory of music, and since 2008, she began to use her musicality in painting. Barbara Rosé Joanny is a « musicolor » painter : Her painting is quite intuitive, with particular attention paid to the choice of colors, the working of textures and depth, in constant connection with music in a synestesic relationship.

Music creates a very strong resonance within her; this interior resonance translates into colors that are felt and the immaterial aspect of music thus becomes a creation through the act of painting, and becomes material once the painting is completed, through the vibrancy of the colors. The tempo, the tone, the rhythm, the phrasing, the nuances, the atmosphere of a musical work all influence her way of painting.

Her works are each inspired by a particular piece of music—for example, Hans Otte's Wassermannmusik for Forêt bleue, with others inspired by her own musical creations. To compose musically and pictorially : more and more, her works lean towards this ultimate goal—that music and painting be united in a “total art" concept, in search of a pure and true creative ideal that compels the observer to go beyond oneself.

In her musical-pictorial quest, she is also undertaking a spiritual quest where her “internal being" expresses and aligns itself with her spirit as well as with the Universe. Painting is for her the need to create through another vector than music, the need to enter into meditation through painting.

Her inspirations are numerous : Gerhard Richter, Joan Mitchell, Yahne Le Toumelin, Zao Wou-Ki, Vassily Kandisky, Paul Klee, Willem de Kooning, Frantz Kline, Sayed Haider Raza and many others.

Barbara Rosé Joanny is one of the emerging ultramarine cultural personalities and she has been developing a reputation in contemporary art since 2016.
