Marc Petrusa

Marc Petrusa is a French artist born in 1954. After graduating in architecture, he chose to devote himself to art. At the same time, he has a dual career as a teacher and an artist. Centered mainly on painting, his work addresses both installation and sculpture. The works, often in large format, combine several techniques and this characteristic reflects the artist's research. Indeed, heterogeneity is the heart of his work. At a time when the notion of the individual is being called into question and where the ego appears as an unstable, even indefinite construction, his work is an echo of itself. Each of his works could be perceived as an Exquisite Corpse, except that this game, invented by the surrealists, requires several individuals. Here, designed by a single artist, the paintings create a strange atmosphere due to the disparity of the elements. The artist is not looking for a unique and recognizable way of painting: each creation is presented as the unstable sum of several approaches. The motifs represented impose themselves at the end of a gestation which combines chance, found images and technical experiments. Accessories in view of the importance that the artist gives to the painting itself, they are nevertheless essential to the structure of the work. Today figurative, they refer to identifiable types and replace the abstract patterns formerly used. Neither image nor collage, the work establishes a precarious unity, that of the subject, endangered by the painting itself. Marc Petrusa works in Paris and in the Sarthe.
