Presentation

Matthias Baratte alias MATTAM is a French artist, architect and designer. He was born in Toulouse on Sunday, July 29, 1990. Since 2010, he works in Brussels.

Drawing has always accompanied him everywhere, first with pencils on loose sheets and then, more ambitiously, with spray paint on large walls. He has a particular attachment to faces, a real starting point for painting subjects that he wants to capture. Like many, he sponges up the street art culture of his time and draws an important part of his inspiration from it.

During his architectural studies between Brussels and Bogota, MATTAM discovered a new way of thinking and designing. He devotes himself to the realization of models which are for him authentic architectural sculptures. His appetite for models has a considerable impact on his artistic work, which he does in parallel. From now on, he sculpts as he draws.

A recovered material has much more to offer than a new one. MATTAM creates faces with cardboard found in the street. For him, this material worn by time sublimates his portraits of unique and fragile textures. Armed with his cutter, he digs, tears and sculpts the cardboard drawing the lines of a face. The superficial layers fly away and leave place to the intensity of the lower layers which reveal what was then imperceptible. The result is raw and expressive faces with piercing glances, claiming the defects, wrinkles, weaknesses and asymmetries, they value what we are used to hide.
