Presentation

Born in Israel in 1997 Julia Gat, 22, is an emerging photographer based in Marseille (FR),  Rotterdam (NL), and New York (US). Home-schooled as a child, Julia studied Arts & Humanities at the Open University of the UK, before transferring to Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and attending an exchange program at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Julia G. enjoys observing everyday life and documenting photographically what she refers to as chaotic harmony. Often using her large family and circle of friends as models in her work, Julia is drawn simultaneously to heart-warming intimacy and provocative freedom. Alternative education plays a significant role in her work, since Julia grew up in a self-directed environment where she was encouraged to develop her interests at a young age. As a daughter to a painter (mother) and a choreographer (father), Julia has been immersed in an artistic milieu in her native Israel and her adopted home in Marseille, France where she grew up in a family of 6.

As to awards, she won the 1st Prize of the Portrait Festival 2016 in Vichy, France and in 2017 her work was also shown at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. In 2019, Julia was selected as a finalist for the BMW Residency in Paris as well as a finalist in the Blurring the Lines contest in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Her photography has been published in PHOTO Magazine, Fisheye Magazine, iGNANT, L'Oeil de la Photographie and more.
