Yuichi Yokoyama

A graduate of the painting department of Musashino Art University, he first devoted himself exclusively to painting, before extending his graphic and pictorial research to the field of comics. Through his works, Yokoyama endeavors to explore a radically different world, to present fragments of an outside, of an elsewhere, of a tomorrow that nothing announces. The landscapes and architectures are made up of simple volumes showing a clear predilection for the straight line; women do not exist there and men, decked out in puzzling masks and costumes, coldly indulge in opaque actions.
Yokoyama's designs are unlike anything else. There is therefore no need to bother with the usual distinctions (manga, comic strip, graphic novel, etc.) with regard to him, placing himself - without posing, provocation or voluntarism - outside any established category, his work ignores influences, schools and the genres.
For several years, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and internationally. In France, his work was shown in 2012 during the Planète manga exhibition at the Center Pompidou and during the contemporary drawing fair Drawing Now in 2013. In 2014, the exhibition Yuichi Yokoyama: Wandering Through Maps, un Voyage à Travers les Cartes takes place at the Pavillon Blanc de Colomiers. In 2018, the Palais de Tokyo presented his work in the group exhibition Enfance, Encore un jour Banane pour le Poisson Rêve, in parallel, the MAMCO also presented his work for the opening of its graphic arts cabinet.
In addition to his work of author, he carries out eclectic works such as the decoration of Toyoto Prius at the Aichi Triennale 2013, the creation of costumes for the Italian theater company Dewey Dell the same year, or the creation of a showcase for Hermès in Shinjuku in 2014. In France, it is published by Editions Matière and exhibited by the Anne Barrault gallery in Paris.
