Bakhyt Bubikanova

Bakhyt Bubikanova is a Kazakhstani artist and was born in Aktobe in 1985. She studied sculpture, although she also explored other disciplines including painting, photography, video and installation art. She now lives and works in Almaty.


Bakhyt Bubicanova is a child of globalisation. She has experienced the paradoxes of the latter, which opposes respect for local and regional traditions with a necessary adjustment to the dominant Western culture. Rapid economic development leaves behind a feeling of nostalgia and a definitively contemporary depression, this century’s newest disease, which serve as inspiration for the artist.
Bakhyt Bubicanova regularly tackles the subjects of nomadic life and identity. She also offers an in-depth study of the violence which exists in industrial societies and the resulting loss of meaning at an individual and collective level. Through her paintings, the artist ponders the future of local traditions, minority cultures and the relationship between mankind and nature, its safe haven. The duty of remembrance is undoubtedly her artistic signature.
