Marija Snipaite

Sculptor Marija Šnipaitė's creative process consists of searching for various links between everyday rituals and co-cultural as well as visual experiences. The reflections of these connections turn into spatial structures, in which elements give up their customary functions and usual materiality. Most objects are balancing between an attempt to remain abstract, and at the same time be identified and recognised by the viewer. The artist herself refers to some of her works as “staged spatial installations". 

The composition of these installations and the artificiality of the used materials are reminiscent of a scenography in which the objects are closely interconnected and related by a common narrative. The objects appearing in the artwork's space create an associative net which allows the viewer to fall into melancholic, slumberous and timeless states. 

Šnipaitė's installations are often formed using structures of landscape, in which the surrounding motives are recreated from everyday elements. By variating between them, the author transforms common phenomena into mesmerizing atmospheric stories, where a certain attentiveness to space, the environment, memory and time can be sensed.
